The flat felt emptier without Amy’s lively chatter, her departure for the pageant leaving a quiet that hung heavy like stale air. In the kitchen, Chitra stood at the counter, her knife slicing through onions with sharp, furious chops, tears stinging her eyes—maybe from the onions, maybe from the fight brewing inside her. Her saree pallu was yanked tight over her belly, a shield against the world. Across the room, Sid sprawled on the couch, legs kicked out, staring at the TV where a cricket match buzzed on, his face locked in a stubborn scowl.

Akki shuffled in from the hall, twirling a jangling keychain between his fingers—a cheap little trinket he’d snagged somewhere—his hair still messy from the morning breeze. He glanced between them, feeling the tension thick as day-old curd, and dropped onto the couch armrest with an easy grin.
